3D printing: Defense Distributed prints a functional revolver
They had announced : Distributed Defense has succeeded. In a report by Forbes, the American company introduced its first gun made entirely with a 3D printer. Lethal weapon made entirely of plastic and could be rendered undetectable.
"Liberator" is the name given to the prototype revolver printed Defense Distributed by the company. A shootout test took place in Texas, under the eye of journalists Forbes. The gunmen began by activating the trigger of the gun remaining distance before the founding of Defense Distributed, Cody R. Wilson, will seize the gun to shoot himself.
The design of the gun is a bit futuristic, halfway between the children's toy and a weapon taken from a science fiction movie. It has been fully "printed" white plastic and blue for lacrosse, and despite its appearance, toy balls here are very real. The gun consists of 15 different pieces, all made with a 3D printer. To stay within the law, Defense Distributed had to add metal parts to final assembly, so that the weapon remains detectable by conventional safety gates. But this addition does not affect the ability of the weapon to shoot, and it is quite possible to print a revolver entirely of plastic, undetectable yet operational.
3D plans available !
This technical prowess, it is mostly a political will on the part of the creator Cody R. Wilson seeks to prove the uselessness of state control over firearms. With this in mind, Defense Distributed put freely online 3D model of the weapon. The files required for printing the revolver are available at this address.
Many commentators were skeptical about the reliability of a weapon made entirely of plastic. One difficulty that business Defense Distributed bypassed using a treatment with acetone on the barrel of the weapon, to limit the friction experienced. In the long term, there is still a long way to go before achieving a weapon that anyone can print from home. Future goals of the company will be to change their methods of design to make the subject easier to print with cheap 3D printers.
