Sony and Panasonic have announced their intention to create optical discs capable of storing 300 GB of data
The next generation of optical storage technology that will replace the end of 2015 Blu-ray disc (25GB on a layer or 50GB on a dual layer) will be able to store up to 300 GB of data. If Sony and Panasonic have decided to work together to develop these discs, the decision of this investment seems a bit strange at the time of the SSD Pro 1.6TB and many platforms online storage.
If short-term arrival of 4K video programs requires support of this type, the market would be more oriented towards longer-term needs of business archives and government services. Optical discs specialize in resistant archival rather well to environmental factors such as water and dust in addition to changes in temperature and humidity. In addition, governments and industry concerned with the security of their data begin experimenting unconnected back-light technologies, much more difficult to hack the solutions online storage or network.
