Twitter Blocked by the Turkish government
Municipal elections will be held in Turkey on March 30. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and some of his relatives are suspected of corruption. To ensure that information is disseminated, it has ordered the blocking of Twitter. And, against the advice of President Abdullah Gül. Although Turkish citizens were able to circumvent this prohibition, Turkey still limited internet access.
Since December, the Turkish prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and some relatives are accused of corruption. Communication channels, social networks have helped transmit incriminating records, not surprisingly, displeased the first Islamic-conservative minister who had already qualified Twitter "troublemaker."
Last month, the Turkish parliament passed amendments that strengthen the internet control. Under the guise of protecting the family and youth, they can block websites and retain valued insulting or discriminatory content. From the outside, this new control is seen as censorship.
It will not take long before these amendments are applied. Turkish President Abdullah Gül, has declared that "YouTube and Facebook are recognized worldwide platforms. Prohibition is out of the question. "Yet the Prime Minister has to block Twitter. Because the social network has not withdrawn posts that obstructed Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated that "security of (my) country" was at stake!
Specifically, Internet access providers were ordered to block access to Twitter this March 20. Users, however, managed to circumvent this prohibition to communicate.
But this decision shows how the Turkish government wants to have control over freedom of expression and communication. The Prime Minister said: "(We) are determined not to let the Turkish people to be slave to YouTube and Facebook." An inversion of the things that shocks the European authorities and international human freedoms. Not sure that this decision is soon revoked or, conversely, that the Prime Minister to stick to Twitter.
