CES 2013: Smartphones are increasingly used for activities more than phone

Smartphones are so successful that they have become more of a digital platform a communication tool in people's lives, according to Shawn Dubravac, chief economist for the consumer association, Consumer Electronics Association. "I think we are entering an era post-smartphone", said Dubravac to journalists before the show opens Tuesday.

He says that 65% of time spent on smartphones is spent on activities that are not related to communication with the use of applications dedicated to health, entertainment and other activities. "We are not only remote but also telephony communications were the primary activity of these devices," he said. People today have better screens, "we are moving to a request for high resolution images that will have an impact on offers internet services."

But the economist also noted that the ultra high-definition televisions (Ultra HD) placed on the market by a few manufacturers struggled to find their clients because of their high cost. Only 1.5 million of these TVs would be sold annually until 2016, he said, claiming that the technology would not win quickly.

The International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the world's largest trade fair for technology sector that weighs a thousand billion of dollars, is open from Tuesday 8 to Friday 11 January with press days starting Sunday, January 6.
