DDR4 Samsung starts mass production
Designed for next-generation servers, the DDR4 modules, Samsung Electronics begins mass production, provide a transfer rate of 2.667 megabits per second.
Samsung Electronics, the semiconductor division of South Korean giant began mass production of DDR4 memory modules that will equip servers, workstations and storage arrays next generation. This component will gradually replacing DDR3 (Double Data Rate 3), with higher performance and lower power consumption than its predecessor.
However, there are still some doubts about whether the market is ready to move the current volumes of DDR3 memory that still equip a large number of servers are and other products. Some analysts believe that DDR4 will begin to generalize in servers and PCs in 2015.
Yesterday, Samsung said that the first DDR4 modules available offer a capacity of 4 GB, with memory chips engraved in 20 nm. Other versions with 32 and 64 GB will be produced when the demand will be there.
This bar DDR4 4GB ensure a flow rate of 2.667 megabits per second, an increase of 1.25x compared to DDR3 also engraved in 20 nm, while reducing energy consumption by more than 30%, according to Samsung. The South Korean has not provided information on the timing of delivery of these bars. Information on prices are also not yet available, says a spokesman for the firm.
The DDR4 standard was approved in September 2012 by the JEDEC Solid State Technology Association.
