Intel introduces Minnowboard, a direct competitor of Raspberry Pi
Intel unveiled the Minnowboard, a micro-PC based on the x86 architecture that is reminiscent of the Raspberry Pi More expensive but also more powerful, this computer has the distinction of being above (almost) fully open-source both by the software that ships as its components.

Minnowboard also has a graphical component Intel GMA 600, the only part of the card will not be open source. For it is another specificity Minnowboard, all physical and embedded software components (the OS is provided with the purchase and a Linux distribution Angstrom) but obviously this graphical component.
The source code for this component remains the owner, but at the LinuxCon conference, David Anders, the engineer behind the Minnowboard project, said he did not despair of one day seeing the source code for this component as open to the public.
Open source means here that the code used to run the Minnowboard and plans and specifications describing the various components are fully available to the public. It is quite possible to build itself its own model Minnowboard drawing on information released by the manufacturers, or start from an existing model to improve or adapt to its needs without to request authorization from Intel.
With this product, though Intel does not specifically address the midst of hobbyist tinkerers of the Open Hardware, but the industrial world, allowing users to develop prototypes quickly, without constraints but still compatible with the x86 architecture.
Intel
at least put on a similar computer in terms of size, Minnowboard, which
is in the form of a motherboard about 10 cm side (while the Raspberry Pi is
in credit card format). Sold for 199$ , Intel mini PC plays quality:
Minnowboard is generally more expensive than its competitors (Raspberry
Pi is sold for 25$) but offers better features. Equipped with an Intel
Atom E640 1GHz processor, Minnowboard also have 1GB of DDR2 memory, an
HDMI port, an analog audio output, a gigabit Ethernet port, 2 USB ports
as well as a port SATA2 3Gb / s and a micro-SD slot.
